ERGOCERT HELLAS A.E. GR English 2025 Certification Badge

Inspection and Certification of the first LNG Gasification Facility (EAYFA) in Northern Greece

Ergocert undertook the inspection and certification for the issuance of the Final Certificate for the first LNG Storage and Gasification Station that began operating in Northern Greece, in the area of Dimitra, Serres.

Liquefied natural gas (LNG) regasification stations are critical equipment in the natural gas distribution and supply process and are typically used to supply urban areas as well as remote areas outside the pipeline network.

Parties involved in the execution of the project

The station was deisgned and constructed by ATEKE in collaboration with the Gazil Hellas and Crignas on behalf of DEPA.

Ergocert  – in collaboration with the other organizations – managed and carried out all the testing and inspections to ensure the proper construction of the facility and its compliance with the requirements and specifications of national and European regulations.

The role of a certification body

The inspection and certification of the station was particularly critical - beyond the legal requirements - to ensure the proper execution of the construction project, the prevention of accidents, and the protection of individuals who will be working and present in the vicinity of the facility.

Audits and inspections for the certification of the station

Ergocert's inspection and certification services covered all subsystems and equipment units of the station, including:

  • Cryogenic LNG tank
  • Two LNG vaporizers
  • Electric natural gas heater
  • Regulating & Metering Station with filters, regulators, relief valves and turbine meter
  • Odorization module
  • Electrical/mechanical components: cryogenic ball valves, non-return valves, safety valves, pressure gauges, ESD instruments
  • Pipelines: A304 stainless steel, seamless

Ergocert provided inspection services throughout the project and specifically performed:

  • Review of technical file & design studies
  • Monitoring equipment manufacturing and installation
  • WPS/PQR/WQTC welding inspections and NDT (visual, ultrasonic, magnetic particles, dye penetrant)
  • Inspection of hydraulic and pneumatic tests (tightness, strength)
  • Inspection of electromechanical equipment, valves, and RMS station
  • Inspection of functional tests and trial operation
  • Review of material and equipment certificates, operating and maintenance manuals

Upon completion of all required inspections, tests, and reviews, Ergocert, as an Accredited Body, issued the Final Construction Inspection Certificate for the EAYFA facility, ensuring that the project fully complies with the PED Directive 2014/68/EU and the Technical Regulation for Onshore LNG Facilities (FEK 3148/B/12.05.2023).

Project Completion

The subsequent interconnection of the LNG station with a high-efficiency combined heat and power plant contributed to meeting energy needs and saving resources for the end user.

The project is a successful example of cooperation for the provision of effective and sustainable energy solutions and contributes to the transition of Greek industry to a more sustainable energy future.
