Lift inspection: Frequency & Registry (2026 extension)

The landscape surrounding lift inspection and certification in Greece has changed significantly over recent months. The accidents that occurred in lifts demonstrated that the safety of our journeys within buildings is not a given, but depends on consistency in the maintenance, inspection and certification of lifts.

The introduction of the new regulatory framework and the now mandatory registration to Digital Lift Register, bring to the fore the need for strict adherence to the periodicity of checks.

However, in order for an owner or manager to carry out the required re-inspection of a lift by an Accredited Body in good time, they must he knows the exact re-inspection period for his lift.

How often should the periodic lift inspection take place

According to current legislation, the intervals for periodic inspection are not the same for all lifts. How often the periodic inspection is mandatory depends on the use of the building where it is located and the number of floors.

Residential lifts

  • Up to 6 stops: every 6 years
  • Over 6 stops: every 5 years

Lifts in commercial buildings

  • Up to 6 stops: every 4 years
  • Over 6 stops: every 3 years

Lifts in hotels

  • Up to 200 beds: every 3 years
  • Over 200 beds: every year

Lifts in public buildings and facilities serving the general public

  • Every year

For the calculation of the stops, not only the main floors must be included, but also the ground floor, the basement and any other floor at which the lift stops.

For example, for a lift in an apartment building with 5 floors the number of stops is 6 – 5+1 including the ground floor – and therefore the periodic re-inspection must be carried out every 6 years.

If, however, the lift makes stop in the basement then the number of stops is 7 and the re-inspection periodicity every 5 years.

Where can you see the next inspection date

Following the completion of the inspection and certification of the lift, there are 2 points where a specific date for the re-inspection is clearly stated.

1. On the lift certificate

The date of the scheduled periodic re-examination is explicitly stated in the Certificate issued by the Body.

2. On the inspection sticker

The Inspection Body, along with the certificate, shall deliver to the owner or the maintenance technician of the lift a special inspection sticker, which should preferably be placed in a prominent position inside the lift car.

The name of the Certification Body and the date (month and year) of the next inspection are indicated on the sticker.

What applies to the Lifts Registry

The previous deadline announced by the Ministry of Development for the registration of lifts in the National Registry was extended by new closing date on 30 June 2026.

This extension gives a final window of time for owners, managers and maintenance personnel who have not already completed the registration procedure to do so and remains mandatory for all lifts.

We remind you that in any case the request for carrying out the periodic reinspection of a lift is the responsibility of the owner, whereas the audit must be carried out exclusively by an inspection body accredited by the National Accreditation System.

Η Ergocert Hellas It is an Accredited Body by ESYD for the inspection and certification of lifts and with 10+ years of experience, it undertakes the periodic inspection of lifts throughout Greece, ensuring your lift's compliance with legislation.
