ISO 50001 Energy Management System

What is ISO 50001

ISO 50001 is an international standard for Energy Management Systems (Energy Management System – EnMS) and provides a comprehensive framework for the systematic management and improvement of an organization's energy efficiency.

Through systematic monitoring of energy data and implementation of appropriate management programs, organizations can reduce energy consumption, limit operating costs and minimize their environmental footprint.

At the same time, ISO 50001 certification contributes to the adoption of a strategic and sustainable approach to energy use, enhancing the competitiveness of businesses and supporting the effort to reduce emissions and protect the environment.

Which organizations can adopt ISO 50001

The ISO 50001 standard is aimed at businesses and organizations regardless of size and sector, contributing to the rational understanding of the points and methods of energy consumption, as well as the identification of opportunities for improving energy efficiency and saving resources.

  • The ISO 50001 standard is aimed at businesses and organizations regardless of size and sector, contributing to the rational understanding of the points and methods of energy consumption, as well as the identification of opportunities for improving energy efficiency and saving resources.
  • For businesses and organizations with high energy consumption, ISO 50001 certification strengthens their credibility at an international level and facilitates the achievement of sustainable development goals.

Additionally, the ISO 50001 standard follows the High-Level Structure (Annex SL). Developing a standard with the High-Level Structure helps align various ISO standards through a cross-standard structure. This way, its integration into a comprehensive Management System is facilitated, along with other standards such as ISO 9001 (Quality Management System), ISO 14001 (Environmental Management System) and other standards.

Why you should get ISO 50001 certified

ISO 50001 Certification Process

The initial assessment for obtaining ISO 50001 Certification is implemented through a structured and transparent process that includes two stages:

Initial Assessment: Stage I Audit

Review of the completeness and adequacy of the organization's documented Energy Management System.

Initial Assessment: Stage II Audit

Review of the implementation and effectiveness of the management system. The audit examines all relevant information, performance targets, internal controls and processes, assessing the organization's full compliance with the selected ISO standard, and serves as the final step in achieving the organization's certification.

After a successfull evaluation, the company receives their ISO Certification, valid for 3 years.

Surveillance Audits

During the certificate's validity period, surveillance audits (2 in total) are conducted annually to confirm the seamless and continued implementation of the Management System.

Recertification is achieved by re-evaluating the Management System before the current certificate expires.
