On September 16, 2026, ISO 9001:2026 was officially published, the first revision of the international quality management standard after its 2015 edition. ISO 9001 remains the most widely adopted management system standard with more than one million certified certificates internationally and thousands of active certificates in Greece.

If your business is certified to ISO 9001, you probably already have three questions:

  • Does our certificate still apply?;
  • Do we have to change the whole system?;
  • How much time do we have to complete the transition to ISO 9001:2026?;

In this guide, we explain what ISO 9001:2026 is, why the standard was revised, what changes are made, and what you should do at each stage of the transition.

What is ISO 9001:2026 and when was it published?;

The ISO 9001:2026 This is the sixth edition of the ISO 9001 standard (Quality Management System), following the editions of 1987, 1994, 2000, 2008 and 2015. It was published on September 16, 2026 and replaces ISO 9001:2015, including the Amd 1:2024 modification for climate change. This is not a new standard, but an evolution of the existing one.

ISO 9001:2026, like its previous versions, can be applied by any organization, regardless of size or industry, and helps it consistently provide products and services that meet customer requirements and legislation, continuously improving its processes.

Why was ISO 9001 revised?;

Each standard of the International Organization for Standardization is dynamic and is periodically reviewed to remain relevant and useful to the organizations that implement it. ISO 9001:2015 has already been in effect for about eleven years, and during this time the business environment has changed significantly: more complex supply chains, faster technological changes, new and emerging risks, changing customer expectations, and greater pressure for rapid adaptation. These were added to regulatory requirements around sustainability and transparency, as well as the way organizations now combine more than one standard in the same management system.

The revision, however, does not change the philosophy of the standard, namely the approach, the structure of the system, and continuous improvement. The changes are specific and aim to evolve the standard, emphasize continuous improvement of the business, and adapt it to the needs of the market.

What are the key changes in ISO 9001:2026?;

1. Enhanced role of the Management in implementing a culture of quality and ethical behavior

Senior Management is now more closely involved in promoting the culture of quality and ethical behavior within the organization. The company’s culture of quality and code of ethics should be integrated into the values and philosophy of the company and reflected through the daily practices of the organization.

In fact, the new version of the standard seeks the substantive and practical implementation of a quality culture, which is not limited to formal corporate policies and institutional documents.

At the same time, the new edition highlights the need to disseminate the culture of quality and ethical behavior among the organization’s staff, with the Management role in training and awareness-raising now strengthened.

2. Risks and opportunities, separately

The original clause is reorganized into three sub-clauses: identification of risks and opportunities (6.1.1), actions for risks (6.1.2), and actions for opportunities (6.1.3).

In the 2015 edition, opportunities often «disappeared» within the risk register, with a general reference. In the review by Management, the effectiveness of actions for risks is now evaluated separately from that of actions for opportunities.

They are now evaluated and monitored independently, with the aim of promoting a culture of continuous improvement and taking initiatives when the Company recognizes business and operational opportunities.

3. Quality policy linked to the strategy

The organization’s quality policy must take into account the context and identity of the organization and support its strategic direction. Essentially, the quality policy should become more company-specific and not resemble a general, «standardized» policy that will hardly meet the requirement anymore.

4. A slightly modified structure

The new version of the standard follows the Harmonized Structure (HS), which is an evolution of the previous High Level Structure to facilitate the integration and compatibility of multiple management systems (such as ISO 14001, ISO 27001 Mr. etc.) in the company.

Overall, the changes introduced with the revision of ISO 9001 are deemed applicable and feasible with reasonable effort, depending on their context and objectives. The new version does not differ radically from that of 2015, but it changes targeted points within a general structure that remains the same. Moreover, organizations that have already incorporated the Modification Amd 1:2024 for climate change within their organization, they have already incorporated a portion of the required modifications.

What does the revision actually mean for your business?;

Your certificate remains valid. The transition must be completed by September 30, 2029, and can be done through a scheduled surveillance inspection or a re-certification or a separate transition inspection. 

The combination of transitioning with an already scheduled inspection helps to limit the costs for the business. However, it is important to schedule the inspection sufficiently early as any findings in the inspection will require time to be resolved. 

Until March 31, 2028, you can still certify according to ISO 9001:2015, but the transition to the new version will need to be made a little later. If your timeline allows, it is preferable to design your system directly based on ISO 9001:2026.

4 steps for a smooth transition to ISO 9001:2026

The company's preparation for the transition to ISO 9001:2026 follows four main stages.

  1. Information about the new versionInformation about the changes to ISO 9001:2026 can be provided in various ways. For example, if the company has a structured and experienced quality department, the standard can be purchased and the processes can be carried out internally. Alternatively, executives from the relevant department of the company can participate in training through seminars from specialized organizations or contact specialized external consultants.
  2. Analysis of deviations (Gap Analysis)This process involves systematically comparing the company’s existing Quality Management System with the new and modified requirements, in order to identify the areas that require intervention. Again, this specific stage can be implemented either internally by company executives or in collaboration with external consultants. 
  3. Adaptations and training: This stage is particularly important, as its proper and careful implementation will save time and resources from potential findings in the audit, documentation gaps, and other related issues. The company makes the changes in its system, updates the necessary system documents and procedures, and most importantly, trains its staff on the new requirements and procedures according to their role. Special training must be provided to internal auditors and quality department executives regarding their new responsibilities, while targeted information must also be provided to the remaining executives.
  4. Verification and internal inspectionThe final stage is the implementation of an internal audit and review by management based on the new version to verify the proper implementation of the transition requirements to the company's system. Thus, the company is ready to schedule the transition audit with the certification body.

Frequently asked questions about ISO 9001:2026

No. ISO 9001:2015 certificates will no longer be valid on September 30, 2029. Until then, you can continue with your inspections as usual. However, it should be noted that the transition to the new version (with surveillance or transition inspection) does not automatically extend the 3-year validity period of the certificate.

The transition must be completed by September 30, 2029. However, as of April 1, 2028, certifications/re-certifications will be conducted exclusively in accordance with ISO 9001:2026 and new certificates based on ISO 9001:2015 will no longer be issued. 

Not necessarily. The transition can be made together with the surveillance inspection of the existing certificate in force or the re-certification inspection, or in a separate emergency inspection.

The company certificate is withdrawn at the end of the transition period and ceases to be valid, even if the certificate originally had a later expiration date.

No. The company’s PDCA cycle does not need to be re-written. Compliance with the new requirements of ISO 9001 affects only certain points while maintaining a large percentage of the existing system.
